Matrix (or Mat)

Early on, a matrix was a copper mould of an image or a glyph; lead was poured into the mould to produce a sort. In phototypesetting, a matrix is a negative image of a character on a font disk.

Maximilien Vox

French typographer, wood engraver, cartoonist and author. He is primarily known for his system for the classification of typefaces, known as Vox-Atypl, wich has become an international standard. Vox also designed a number of book covers for the French publishing houses Stock, Gallimard and Grasset.
