Like other teaching tools used in the Design major at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, the concept of typography is taught via a project. This project could be in a number of areas book printing, on-screen work, the public sphere) and on a variety of scales, depending on the public and the context of the issue addressed. The goal is not to train type designers, in the strict sense of the term, but rather to train artistic actors or directors that play a role in the field of design(s), including type design.
The programme introduces students to a practice that has completely changed and become fully democratic with the arrival of the digital era. The teaching thus works with these concepts of evolution, particularly the social and political role of design as well as publishing practices. Whether or not the message is readable is irrelevant – typography is part of the "generic toolbox" available to the student throughout his or her studies..
