Typography at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Art in Nancy

The Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Art in Nancy (ENSA) has a traditional print shop in exceptional condition (lead and wood type, printing press, etc.) and a DTP process available to all students in every programme.

This technical framework, which has become rare in art schools, underpins the teaching of typography in the Communication option, based on two principles: classes and workshops/personal projects, directly engaged with these workshops.

The Communication option is not designed to offer complete mastery of the universe of "graphic design" but encourages experiments, interchanges and frictions with today's world.

The Communication option is not designed to offer complete mastery of the universe of "graphic design" but encourages experiments, interchanges and frictions with today's world. These principles promote, in terms of typography, the emergence for some students of more specific practice and research.

For some, a natural entry to the Atelier national de recherche typographique (ANRT) within the ENSA testfies to a real investment in this research domain.
